The Geo brand name of cars and small SUVs that was started in 1989 by General Motors. They were originally created by GM as a way to combat the influx of small, foreign cars that became popular after the gas crisis of the 1970s. Both Geo cars and trucks were popular in Austin and elsewhere in the country when they first came out. Things would soon change, though.
By the 1990s, the American public in Austin and elsewhere wasn't very interested in sub-compact cars anymore. Geo sales really began to take a hit. GM continued making them, though, hoping they would pick back up. The last Geo, the Geo Tracker, was produced in 2004. If they had been around even a decade earlier, they may have had a better chance as a brand.
What's interesting is that GM worked really closely with a lot of Japanese auto manufacturers. This was one of the first times that a US car company worked so closely with foreign competitors to get a good, small car in the American market. The main models were the Geo Metro, the Geo Prizm, the Geo Spectrum, the Geo Storm and the popular Geo Tracker. There are still a lot of Geos in Austin if you keep your eyes open.
