Olds Motor Vehicle Company was started in 1897, and during the next ten years, they quickly became the biggest car company in America. They did so well, General Motors purchased the company in 1908. Even after the sale from the original founder, Ransom E. Olds, Oldsmobiles were still known for their luxury and sophistication. The Austin area might not have had a lot of Oldsmobiles around in the early days, but when people saw one, it was something special.
In the 1930s, the company really began to ramp up innovations in the car industry, introducing many features that would take other cars years to get. During the 1940s and 1950s, Oldsmobile continued their introduction of new features on their vehicles, which made them really popular in cities like Kansas City. From new engines to new suspension to other small details, Oldsmobile was responsible for a lot of the new things that came to autos in this period.
In the 1970s, Oldsmobile became obsessed with adding safety features to their vehicles. They were the first car company to employ airbags in one of their models. This soon spread across the whole auto industry.
This was also the decade that saw the birth of many popular models like the Cutlass. (You can still these everywhere you go in Austin or anywhere else in the country, a testament to the cars popularity.) Sales eventually began to slow, though, and one of the longest running car companies in US history closed shop in 2004.
